Student Rubric
This student received a one out of four on the parent and student rubric. This student is currently writing far below proficient kindergarten Common Core writing standards. This student is in the early emergent stage of writing. He has an idea he wants to share. He attempts to use many details in his picture but struggles to create them and covers them with scribbles and coloring. Some words are attempted but not placed on the lines in a conventional way.
Next Steps:
This child could begin to use letters and words to express his ideas by being encouraged to label the important parts of his picture with beginning sounds and adding additional details. This student will be placed in an intervention group and receive one-on-one reading and writing practice in order to address his needs. I will add dictation for the student to help him see how oral language is translated into the written language. This will help the student see what they have said and make thoughts visible.

Student Rubric
This student received a two out of four on the parent and student rubric. This student is currently writing below proficient for kindergarten Common Core writing standards. This student has moved to the next stage of writing and is now matching letters and sounds. He has written many sight words and this suggests that he is in the phonetic stage of writing, where he can hear small segments of sounds and convert them into writing. He is experimenting with using a sentence rather than labeling a picture with words. He is including details in his picture by making his people all look different and by including a house.
Next Steps:
This child has not fully grasped the concept of sentence structure and has not begun placing space or punctuation into their work. In order to move this student to the next stage, I will work with this student to develop the concept of spacing between words.
