My students and their families have engaged with people, programs, and resources which have the potential to open doors for them. My hope is that they will continue to access those opportunities.
All students should have access to a world-class education to help ensure that any child with dreams and determination can succeed and reach their full potential. In the United States, inequitable school funding impedes the ability for all students to have an equitable education. According to the Department of Education, forty-five percent of high-poverty schools in low-income communities receive significantly less state and local funding than other schools in the same district.
Providing students with a quality education requires more than teaching them how to read and write. It is about giving them exposure to opportunities that will stimulate inspiration, spark passion, and lighten up pathways that students never imagined.
My school is located in the McElderry Park neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. The neighborhood is made up of low-income households plagued by poverty and insufficient resources. Despite the many socio-economic challenges my students experience, it is my goal as an educator to provide my students with a safe and exciting learning community. My classroom provides my students with opportunities to explore and challenge themselves as they navigate throughout their educational journey.
I organize experiences that my students would not otherwise be exposed to help my students become well-rounded individuals, increase their academic growth, and improve their social-cultural consciousness. Conclusion:
It is my responsibility to expose my students to a variety of vibrant and valuable experiences. My students typically lack access to resources that would allow them to have those experiences. I am committed to opening doors for my students and helping them navigate through new opportunities. By engaging my students in outside activities and bringing in guest speakers, I have been able to show my students a variety of ways in which they can connect to the content they are learning in my class and begin to visualize their future. Through these efforts, I am able to fulfill my responsibility as an educator by creating lifelong learners using all available resources.
