Student A started Kindergarten with above average writing skills. In one of the first assignments, student A was able to skip past many of the beginning stages of writing and was able to compose a writing piece of an emergent writer in Stage three of the writing process.

This student received a two out of four on the parent and student rubric. Student A was writing just below the proficient kindergarten Common Core writing standards. She received a high two because she was drawing a clear picture, labeling her drawing, spacing her words, and writing some sight words correctly. This student had a clear idea she wanted to share. Her pictures and sentence match. She was using a sentence to tell about her picture. She included details in her picture and labeled them to help share her ideas. She clearly placed spaces to separate her words. She began the sentence with a capital letter and uses a combination of upper and lower case letters.
Next Steps:
This child has not completely developed a concept of a sentence. Sentences need to have punctuation. To help this student understand punctuation, she will be taught in a small group to reread the sentence and listen for natural pauses and endings.

Student A received a three out of four on the parent and student rubric. This student was writing proficiently and was meeting the kindergarten Common Core writing standards. This student was able to make significant growth in her writing within two months. Her pictures had many details that match her sentence. She was using bigger word wall words correctly like "because". She clearly placed space to separate her words. She began the sentence with a capital letter and uses a combination of upper and lower case letters. She correctly used punctuation to end her sentence.
Next Steps:
This student needed to focus on handwriting and correctly using the lines. To facilitate that I we played the writing on the line game during small group. This student began to add more details to her writing by adding more sentences.

Student A received a four out of four on the parent and student rubric. This student is currently writing above grade level expectations for this time of the year and is meeting the kindergarten Common Core writing standards. Her picture has many details that match her sentences and she is correctly labeling them. She is using the correct spelling that she is finding on the word wall and in her personal dictionary. She is placing spaces to separate her words. She begins sentences with a capital letter and attempts to use capitals for other words like Earth. She is correctly using punctuation to end her sentences and is beginning to separate her ideas with commas.
Next Steps:
This student needs to practice writing more than one sentence on a topic. During small group, this student and I will work on generating multiple ideas for one topic. We will begin to use a graphic organizer to help separate her thoughts.
